    The Juice Receiver

    By | February 18, 2008

    juice.gif

The Juice Receiver is a very interesting software. Earlier called iPodder, this software allows you to download and listen to content from the internet. Juice is what is known as a podcatcher- it catches podcasts. It allows you to subscribe to certain feeds and download content from there. The software works much like RSS feeds except that it downloads audio from internet radio and various other channels. It also allows you to provide URLs so that you can download the episodes you like from the internet. It automatically checks for content and can detect it and downloads it automatically without interacting any further with you. The downloaded content is then integrated with the iTunes on your computer and added to your iTunes library.

Juice also allows you to connect your mp3 player to your computer and sync it so that episodes are downloaded directly onto it. Installing Juice is also a simple affair and it is available in 3 different variants for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Juice also comes with its own directory and though this obviously does not include everything, it does include all the popular feeds and if you’re new to the world of podcasts this is the perfect place to start. You can tune into the popular podcasts before you begin exploring and find your own personal favorites.

Juice also has great new features that allow you to control what you are downloading everyday such as deciding the intervals at which to search for new content on the net. Preferences gives you options that allow you to do everything from setting the default folder to download to, rss file associations, setting the file path to your mp3 player, choosing the default desktop media player which include iTunes, Windows Media Player, Winamp and if you set it to no player it will use the player of your choice.

Juice is also free and ridiculously easy to use so my suggestion is to try it out for yourself.

    Make your blog stand out

    By | February 17, 2008

Since podcasts have increasingly become very easy to create a lot of people are taking to it and the result isn’t always good. There are a million podcasts on the internet today are the variation in quality is remarkable.

One very important factor in a podcast obviously is sound quality. Most people think that it is the content that matters but the honest truth is that sound quality is equally important. No listener is patient enough to stay put and listen to your podcast when it has poor sound quality. Filter out noises or use software that allows you to edit out audio parts. It is also better to use a fixed microphone if you’re doing the recording in one place rather than constantly moving around.

Use a catchy name and catchy slogan for your podcasts. Remember that the public attention span is very short and unless you have something that really catches their attention, no one is going to be listening. Find a name and slogan which reflects the nature and theme of the show.

The most important thing is to be unique. There are millions of podcasts on the internet today and your show needs to have a unique and different perspective if it needs to stand out in the crowd.

Another thing is to identify your listeners and cater to them. You should know your target audience well and prepare and present your show so as to appeal to them.

The length of the podcast is also very important. Avoid creating a podcast that is too long. Do not ramble unnecessarily because all listeners have a limited amount of time.

Like everything on the net, a podcast also needs to be regular. Fix a schedule so that you have a new episode up at regular intervals. If they are few and far between, your audience will not be too pleased.

    The ePodcast creator

    By | January 31, 2008

    podcast.jpg

Industrial Audio Software’s product the ePodcast Creator is a package with everything rolled into it. It is an audio recorder and editor, it creates RSS feeds and it is an FTP client. It has some of the best publishing tools available including tag and feed creation and it also generates XM & HTML files.

It can record audio in WAV or mp3 format and can also convert audio from one format to another. It also supports iTunes tags and feeds. This software also records from virtually any source and also has a long list of filtering tools.

ePodcast can record from any source including a CD, line in, sound card and some others. It is extremely compatible to all sound formats. The only drawback however is that it cannot record from video or record VoIP interactions without upgrading it to the Producer program.

It also has more audio filters than most programs and can also trim and add silences. It can remove clicks and pops and has a record cleaner, as well as a low pass filter and a noise reducer. It also comes with most possible softwares that will allow you to upload your podcast onto your site and allows you to publish files in almost all formats and adjust the bitrates.

This program is also extremely easy to use and people with a bit of experience should have no problem with this. Total novices should however take some time out to experiment with it. In case of a problem embedded help can be accessed through the program. In addition there are a host of FAQs, tutorials and forums where you can get help.

All in all even though ePodcast Creator isn’t a high end podcast creating tool it is fairly competent and manages to remove most glitches from your podcast.

    Podcast cookery classes

    By | January 23, 2008

If you don’t know cooking you can always learn. And no, it doesn’t always have to be from your mum or through. There are podcasts too these days.

Start Cooking is a video podcast that shows you how to make a host of mouth watering dishes step by step with all the procedures including baking, cookery etc.

This is one great show for people who want to learn the basics of cooking irrespective of their age.  This podcast is created by Kathy Maister and she goes about making simple creations and even delicacies. Some of the things that have been featured so far are lasagna, beef stew, roast chicken and even shrimp.

The website also features a great deal of recipes, procedures, cooking tips and other useful stuff which are organized and very easy to follow. This podcast will teach you how to make the yummiest dishes for the people you love.

Then there is also the Chic Podcast which is another foodie show and it features a variety of topics including food, drink and even restaurants.  The show is pretty informal and free flowing and is hosted by Chef Tom Beckman. He can talk about pretty much anything and his topics are rather unconventional.  He can talk about things like what kind of food to eat in what situation, about eggs, the kind of wine to be served with a particular food preparation etc. The show is rather informative and listeners learn a lot of things about food, drink and allied things.

Podcasts featuring cookery shows are becoming increasingly popular and are a very good option for the current generation who like having everything at the click of a mouse. Making cooking easy through the internet was probably the only thing that could have made them take a step towards the chicken.

    management the funny way

    By | January 17, 2008

    pod.jpg

I’ve heard podcasts on almost every topic- music, movies, books, sports and even grammar. There is also one for aspiring managers.  Manager Tools is created by Michael Auzenne and Mark Hostman. The show is about 30 minutes long and gives managers and managerial hopefuls pointers on what to do to improve their managerial skills.

This does not sound interesting in the least to someone who hasn’t heard it but these guys actually manage to make it sound interesting.  The topics that they pick out are actionable and they tell you how to get them in action and what to do in a situation where you run into pitfalls.  It is shows like this that make you thankful for podcasting because you just don’t have things like this on the radio.  You can get these shows through iTunes because not all of them are available through RSS feeds. This show contains good solid advice from guys who really know what they’re talking about.

Managing a group of people can be an exceedingly difficult thing to do and this show does help you solve a few of those problems.  It is only time and experience coupled with good advice that can solve problems like this.

These guys are extremely funny and quirky. The show is a true entertainer because even if you have nothing to do with the managerial field you will still find yourself liking it. They currently have around a hundred shows and they are available for download free of cost.  To take a topic like this and put in funny things and make it sound like it’s directed at you is an art and these guys have mastered it.  A simple and very novel idea with good production that will keep you entertained for a good 30 minutes.

It is far more comprehensive than editing software and is recommended by those in the business. Good podcasting software helps you do the following:

Though recording the content is the easiest part of the podcasting experience and can be done through almost anything, podcasting software is preferable. This is because it can record from almost any source including a microphone, a CD, the computer’s sound card and some can even record both sides of a VoIP conversation.

    Edit:

All good podcast software come with audio editors which allow you to mix things, cut out segments, add sound effects and do a lot more with your podcast.

    Publishing:

It is during publishing that the different between podcasting software and ordinary editing software comes in. Podcasting software helps you add tags and descriptions to your podcast so you can post it to your blog, site or list it with a blog directory. Also it makes subsequent posts easy.

For all the above reasons it is much better to use podcasting software as compared to ordinary editing software.

Podcasting is user generated content in a very intimate form. It captures your voice, your music or video taken by you. When you have gone to the trouble of creating a podcast why not use the best software which will make it easier for you as well as a more pleasurable experience for the listener? Grammar Girl pulls off a hit

    By | January 1, 2008

There’s one podcast that has got listeners and the media raving.  39 year old Mignon Fogarty or Grammar Girl as she is known has combined her love of the English language with her technological expertise and brought out this very wonderful show. The Grammar girl explains the subtle nuances of the language to listeners in way that is never boring. In spite of her extremely unusual subject, she is a star in her own right.

She doles out grammar lessons in her five minute episode where she debates whether the usage of a certain word is a context is appropriate or not. Though her topic is not something most people would listen to, the way the show is produced makes one listen to it. People get to educate themselves and all the while having a blast. She speaks about verbs, the usage of words, subtle differences in usage etc.

Grammar Girl also has a great sense of humor which shines through in her shows. She is very hip and also very aware of the world and she’s pulled off a novel idea with aplomb. It takes great guts and talent to pull off a show with a subject like this. The script is also very tight and the show has very good production values.

The show is absolutely fantastic and entertaining. I have enjoyed the five minute tidbits just as much as everyone else has. The show has been earning her fantastic reviews and also quite a bit of advertising revenue.  And she has finally made people see that grammar is not always a grey school room. It can be fun, quirky and extremely hilarious if presented in a good way. And the best thing about it is that its short and doesn’t give listeners an opportunity to complain.

The Small Room is well, a little small

    By | December 23, 2007

First the good things. The Small Room is a podcast which is supposed to be an internet radio show and it is recorded live in Brisbane and listeners can call in while it is being recorded. It is available as a podcast around once a week and is an hour long show which plays music and features a lot of chatting between the hosts Mark and Lizzie and has a few stories and anecdotes and also features some bands from Down Under. The good thing about this show is the setup and the fact that it has internet streaming, message boards and users can call in through Skype. Basically it is a very internet friendly setup and something that could get internet users quite interested.

That is however where the good things end. The actual execution of the show is quiet disappointing and the conversation between the hosts is rather uninteresting. While the two being married have great rapport, they topics are never quite riveting.  There is never enough in the conversation to keep you listening for forty five minutes and that is where the show struggles. People are supposed to be calling in and they are not being very obliging. So naturally these two have the carry the show the whole way true and to be honest it isn’t easy to keep listeners hooked to a conversation between two people. Unless its gossip of course.

There however has been a lot of effort that has gone into making the show and that needs to be applauded. The whole setup is taut. What fails is however the production of the show. Hopefully however they will improve over time and things may improve as more and more people start calling in as the audience increases. However there is some potential in this project.

The software you need to get started

    By | December 20, 2007

Podcasting is fairly easy and it doesn’t take much to have your own podcast. To start your own podcast you need to have a few basic software tools.

The first step is to find an audio recorder and editor to record and edit what you want to broadcast on the internet.  One of the most popular software these days is Audacity which works well on both Windows as well as Mac computers.

The next step is to convert it to MP3 format before you upload it to the internet. Converting it so makes it smaller and easier to upload and download. You can use software called LAME or you can still to the old favourite iTunes.

The next thing you need is a Media Player so you can test whether your track works well or not. You certainly don’t want to upload a file that is corrupt or doesn’t work. Try it in both Windows Media Player as well as iTunes and also be sure to add tags about the genre, artist and song name.

The last step to podcasting is to get yourself a file transfer program that allows you to transfer a file to the internet. You could use software like Smart FTP or some similar software.

Once you have followed the above steps you are ready to launch your own podcast.

Once you begin podcasting there are some things you could do to improve things a little bit. You could use software such as Podcast creation to create RSS feeds containing audio files. For your own use you could also get a Download Manager or Windows Podcasting Client for your desktop.

Now that you’ve got the low down on how to start your own podcast maybe you can give the world some of your tunes.
